CHRONIC IDIOPATHIC URTICARIA
Hives (urticaria) that last for more than several
weeks are considered chronic, and in almost all cases, do not have one
specific cause (idiopathic). It is a common condition and affects at least 25%
of the population at some time. Although it is uncomfortable, and cosmetically
unacceptable, it is rarely dangerous. This office does see patients with this
condition very frequently, and all patients can be helped.

recurrences.
The doctors will
take a careful history and examination to be sure the diagnosis is correct, and
that there are not circumstances that require further investigation.
In a very few cases tests will be done to rule out rare causes. In most cases, however, this is not necessary. Please ask if you need an allergy workup.
Fortunately, we
have effective and safe medications to help your discomfort. These are
usually non-sedating anti-histamines, in various combinations, depending on the
severity of your symptoms. It is important to stay on the medications even
after the hives seem to be controlled. We will generally decrease the
medications gradually to prevent the hives from recurring.
